Free online pilot of wine appreciation course available to faculty, staff this spring

Faculty, staff and postdoctoral scholars on the West Lafayette, Northwest and Fort Wayne campuses are invited to sign up for the free online pilot of the popular Food Science 470 Wine Appreciation course this spring. The course begins this Monday (Jan. 13) and runs through April 13.

Christian Butzke, professor of enology, who teaches the course on the West Lafayette campus, will teach the online pilot. The noncredit online course is a study of the history of winegrowing, global grape and wine production techniques, and the economic and political impact of the wine industry as part of modern agriculture.

Descriptive sensory evaluations of more than 40 wines regional wine styles will be conducted. While the recommended wines are not included, participants are encouraged to purchase at least a certain number to better understand different regions, varieties, styles, and production methods.

The online course, which consists of video lectures with interviews, tastings, and discussion groups, can be taken at the participant's convenience via Blackboard (Purdue career account required). The time commitment is expected to be about three hours a week.

Those interested in enrolling in and providing feedback for the pilot should contact Butzke directly at butzke@purdue.edu.
