CILMAR to host diversity, equity and inclusion professional development workshop

A professional development workshop will take place at Purdue on Sept. 16. Amer Ahmed, founder of AFA Diversity Counseling, will lead the event titled “Creating Synergy Between Intercultural and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.”

The Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research (CILMAR) is sponsoring the event. This professional development workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hall for Discovery and Learning Research, Room 131. This workshop is open to faculty and staff. Lunch will be provided and registration is required by Monday (Sept. 9). Participants are asked to attend the duration of the event in order to engage deeply in dialogue with colleagues.

Given the challenges that today’s complex world presents to educators, this workshop will connect theory to practical application. After establishing a shared theoretical basis, members of each constituency will engage their respective colleagues on how to apply this approach practically in two tracks: classroom and administrative settings. Administrators will consider how to bridge structural divides in their work, while faculty will reflect on how to create student-centered classrooms that harness the increasingly diverse and global backgrounds influencing modern classroom dynamics.

Ahmed is a former faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is an innovative strategist with experience in intercultural development and diversity, equity and inclusion work.
