Discovery Park’s Quantum Science and Engineering Institute to host International Quantum Science and Technology Symposium

The Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute, located in Discovery Park, is hosting the International Symposium for Quantum Science and Technology on April 21-23. Composed of top researchers from around the globe, this symposium will cover such topics as quantum matter, quantum photonics, quantum materials and devices, and quantum computation. The list of distinguished presenters includes a Nobel laureate, as well as several scientists coming from overseas such as Austria, Denmark and Israel. The complete list of speakers can be found on the conference website.

“Quantum science is a key priority area of investment, and will no doubt become a defining technology for the future of humankind, and a strong, early, and coordinated multi-sector focus on these technologies is essential,” says Tomás Díaz de la Rubia, vice president for Discovery Park.

This conference will review the current status and important recent international developments in quantum science and technology, and will help chart future directions for this hot-button topic. Purdue’s related research in this field also will be featured through several presentations by notable Purdue faculty and researchers as well a poster session on April 22.

“This conference will further help to establish Purdue as an emerging research center in the quantum field as well as strengthening partnerships,” says Yong Chen, director of the Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute and professor of physics and astronomy and electrical and computer engineering.

Chen and colleagues proposed the International Symposium on Quantum Science and Technology as part of the inaugural Conference Competition sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships. The Conference Competition aims to create a new scholarly conference series that highlights faculty research, teaching, and engagement and brings to campus top-level scholars, researchers, and lecturers. The conference is also co-sponsored by Discovery Park, the colleges of Science and Engineering, departments of Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Mathematics, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Office of Naval Research.

In line with Purdue's 150 Years of Giant Leaps theme, this conference will add to Purdue’s mission by bolstering world-changing research, providing STEM leadership by allowing students and underrepresented groups to interact with world-renowned speakers, and facilitating transformative education by recording lectures and having them available online to benefit millions of users and students worldwide.

Registration for the conference is closed. For more information, contact Jamie Turner at jjturner@purdue.edu or 795-494-3509.

About Discovery Park
Discovery Park is a place where Purdue researchers move beyond traditional boundaries, collaborating across disciplines and with policymakers and business leaders to create solutions for a better world. Grand challenges of global health, global conflict and security, and those that lie at the nexus of sustainable energy, world food supply, water and the environment are the focus of researchers in Discovery Park. The translation of discovery to impact is integrated into the fabric of Discovery Park through entrepreneurship programs and partnerships.

About Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute
Located in Discovery Park, PQSEI fosters the development of practical and impactful aspects of quantum science, and focuses on discovering and studying new materials and basic physical quantum systems that will be suited for integration into tomorrow’s technology. It encourages interdisciplinary collaboration leading to the design and realization of industry-friendly quantum devices with enhanced functionality and performance close to the fundamental limits. PQSEI lays out strategies for the design of systems based on these devices in order to bring these new levels of functionality and performance to a vast community of users.
