Autism acceptance extends to Purdue’s benefits offerings; workshop April 16

While April is celebrated as national Autism Awareness Month (and also as Autism Acceptance Month), Purdue’s commitment to supporting employees and dependents affected by autism through benefits and resources is year-round.

Beginning in 2016, the University made a giant leap forward by extending autism coverage to include applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapy for Purdue benefits-eligible employees on the West Lafayette, Fort Wayne and Northwest campuses and their covered dependents. Physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy benefits are also available.

Human Resources offers family-friendly workshops throughout the year, and this month, one topic may be of particular interest to parents or caregivers of autistic children.

“Behavior Doesn’t Happen Out of the Blue” will focus on problem behavior – both understanding it and redirecting it. The workshop will be presented by Jackie Thaxton, clinical director, LittleStar ABA Therapy, from noon to 1 p.m. April 16 in Stewart Center, Room 204.

Individuals can register online at www.healthyboiler.com by clicking on "Wellness Events." Participants may register up to the day before the workshop. Limited seats are available.

Some additional autism-focused resources are available on Human Resources’ family-friendly website.
