Applications open for Summer Course Design Institute

The Summer Course Design Institute, housed within Purdue's Center for Instructional Excellence, is a course design/redesign program for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. The six-day intensive program provides experience and support to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who have responsibility for leading classes at Purdue.

The program’s design responds to the expressed interest of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers for gaining insight into successful course design with a learning community, instructional developers and evidence-based practices. Structured activities and autonomy-supportive working time, guided by CIE staff, enable graduate and postdoctoral instructors to construct significant learning experiences for their students through evidence-based practices. These practices, implementation, documentation of success, and career resources provided in the institute also make Purdue’s graduate students more competitive in the job market. Topics included in the program include, but are not limited to, learning outcomes, assessments, and activities, cognition and motivation, universal design, constructing a syllabus, and scholarly teaching.

Fourteen scholars participated in the program during the summer of 2018. The scholars represented numerous colleges and schools across campus. They taught courses in a range of formats from face-to-face formats to online courses at Purdue including students at other institutions.

Applications for the 2019 Summer Course Design Institute are due April 12. Applications as well as more information about the program and about previous scholars can be found online.
