New family-friendly workshops available for parents, caregivers

Human Resources is offering family-friendly workshops, bringing in local experts to present a variety of workshops geared toward parents and caregivers. Workshops are open to parents or caregivers with children of all ages, and additional topics will be presented throughout the year.

Those attending are encouraged to bring lunch to eat while listening to the presentation. Time for asking questions and networking with other parents and caregivers will be offered.

Debt Management and Budgeting
April 1 (M). Noon-1 p.m. Purdue Memorial Union, Room 263AB.
The goal of this workshop is to help participants recognize the importance of managing debt. Additionally, it provides steps for maintaining a healthy financial fitness to help participants reach their future financial goals. This workshop will be presented by Tosin Ratchford, dedicated retirement planner, Fidelity.

Behavior Doesn’t Happen Out of the Blue
April 16 (T). Noon-1 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 204.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when kids engage in problem behavior. However, when caregivers start asking questions such as “What is my child trying to achieve?” and “What would be a more appropriate way to achieve that?” problem behavior suddenly seems more manageable. This workshop will be presented by Jackie Thaxton, clinical director, LittleStar ABA Therapy.

Technology with Kids
May 8 (W). Noon-1 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 204.
Phones, tablets, computers, TVs … screens are everywhere these days. Many people spend more than 10 hours a day in front of a screen, and kids are clocking in at an average of six hours or more a day. Learn why screen time should be limited for developing minds and discuss strategies on how to manage technology in a young person’s life. This workshop will be presented by Amber Noll, extension educator, Purdue University.

Breastfeeding: Managing the First Week / Preparing to Go Back to Work/School
May 20 (M). Noon-1 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 311.
The first weeks of breastfeeding are important for you and your baby. Come and learn what to expect during the first week after childbirth; understand baby’s behavior during the first week; and identify common breastfeeding challenges and how to manage them to establish a successful and satisfactory breastfeeding relationship. This workshop will be presented by Azza Ahmed, associate professor of nursing, Purdue University.

Individuals can register online at www.healthyboiler.com by clicking on "Wellness Events"; workshops will be titled as listed above. Participants may register up to the day before the workshop offering. Limited seats are available.
