Human Resources reminds tobacco users of opportunity to avoid tobacco-use additional premium

As a reminder, tobacco users have the option of completing an approved tobacco cessation program to avoid the $500 per person annual tobacco-user additional premium charge that applies to medical plan premiums. Tobacco-cessation programs completed by March 31, 2019, will result in lower premiums for all of 2019, provided that the certificate of completion is submitted by April 30, 2019.  Programs completed after March 31, 2019, will reduce premiums for the remainder of the plan year only, beginning around the time the certificate of completion is submitted.

Additionally, premiums for term life, universal life and critical illness insurance also are based in part on whether or not an employee (and their spouse, if covered) has used tobacco in the last 12 months, and those premiums may be affected as well.

See the recent Purdue Today article “Tobacco-cessation resources available to help kick-start a tobacco-free lifestyle” for details on cessation resources.

For more information about the additional premium, visit the tobacco-user additional premium frequently asked questions page.
