'Candid Cancer Conversations' hour to discuss neglect of race in research talk

Professors Sulma Mohammed and Herman O. Sintim, both of whom are faculty members of the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research, will share a public conversation Tuesday (Jan. 29) on the relative absence of attention to race in discussions of cancer research.

The hour is being called "Candid Cancer Conversations." It will take place 3:30-4:30 p.m. Lawson Computer Science Building, Room 1142. The event is free and open to the public.

Sulma Mohammed Sulma Mohammed

Mohammed, associate professor in comparative pathobiology, and Sintim, Drug Discovery Professor of Chemistry, will discuss the topic in terms of health disparities for populations underrepresented in research. They will examine how this situation has helped shape the field.

This event relates to the "Health, Longevity and Quality of Life" theme of Purdue's Giant Leaps sesquicentennial celebration.

The event is being presented by the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research, the Science Diversity Office, the Association of Multicultural Students and the group Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment (VOICE).
