HHS presenting 'Learn and Lunch' program in celebration of Purdue's 150th

Researchers from the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue will share how they are working to enhance human health and well-being across the life span during the college's Learn and Lunch Program.

The Learn and Lunch Program is one of the events of Purdue's sesquicentennial celebration, 150 Years of Giant Leaps. The Learn and Lunch Program will focus on Health and Longevity, one of the four themes of the Giant Leaps celebration, and will explore topics such as the obesity epidemic and cognitive decline in aging individuals.

All Learn and Lunch presentations include a complimentary boxed lunch and a 45-minute presentation. All presentations are open to the public, but advance registration is required. More information about the presentations, including instructions on how to register, is available online.

The featured Learn and Lunch presentations are:

* Oct. 18. “Time to Dump Your Diet Drinks? Some Not-so-Sweet Effects of Sweeteners.” Speaker is Susan E. Swithers, professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences. Register by Oct. 12.

* Nov. 16. “A Community-based Approach to Combat Indiana’s High Obesity Rate.” Speakers are Tim Gavin, professor and head of the Department of Health and Kinesiology, and Angela Abbott, assistant dean and associate director of Health and Human Sciences Extension. Register by Nov. 12.

* Dec. 5. “Sleep in Individuals with Autism and their Families.” Speaker is AJ Schwichtenberg, assistant professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. Register by Nov. 29.

* Jan. 15. “Teens, Digital Communication and the Perils of Lurking Online.” Speaker is Marion Underwood, professor and dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences. Register by Jan. 9.

* Feb. 13. “A Lifestyle for the Ages.” Speakers are Regan Bailey, associate professor in the Department of Nutrition Science, and Libby Richards, assistant professor in the School of Nursing. Register by Feb. 7.

* March 8. “How to Avoid Pushy Salespeople on Your Next Vacation.” Speaker is Annmarie Nicely, associate professor in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Register by March 4.

Purdue’s yearlong 150th celebration, which lasts from Homecoming 2018 through Homecoming 2019, will celebrate Purdue, its remarkable people, its unique history and its visionary drive to meet the world’s future challenges.
