Training to equip attendees to assist in opioid overdose

Problems with opioid use have appeared often in recent news, and the Purdue chapter of the Academy of Student Pharmacists is offering "Opiate Overdose Response Training and Naloxone Distribution," which will prepare attendees to assist and potentially save a life. The training event, open to all, is at 6 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 20) in Rawls Hall, Room 1057.

The training will be provided by Overdose Lifeline Inc. The student academy is part of the American Pharmacists Association, and APhA-ASP's goals include medication safety and education.

This event will include training to identify the symptoms of an overdose and instructions on how to administer naloxone, an opiate antidote, to an individual experiencing an opiate overdose. Opioids are a subset of opiates. Trainees will receive a free naloxone kit.

Purdue APhA-ASP is hoping that individuals involved in regular contact with large numbers of students -- such as faculty, resident assistants, co-op and Greek leaders -- will attend. Family members of patients being treated with opioids are encouraged also, so they may be prepared in the event of an accidental overdose.

Persons who will attend should RSVP to help planners prepare. The RSVP site is  https://boilerlink.purdue.edu/organization/academyofstudentpharmacists/calendar/details/1085170.
