Lactation Support Program aids nursing mothers, upholds mission of World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated Aug. 1-7, and this year's theme is "Breastfeeding: A Key to Sustainable Development." With more than 50 lactation spaces on Purdue's West Lafayette campus, the Lactation Support Program supports breastfeeding mothers at work.

"A supportive work environment for a breastfeeding mother not only helps the mother pump and maintain her milk supply, but also increases the mother's self-confidence and courage to continue breastfeeding as long as she and her baby desire," says Azza Ahmed, associate professor of nursing.

To help mothers be successful in their transition back to work after having a child, the program includes resources such as locations of all campus lactation spaces and a mother's information packet. Additional resources available include how to obtain breast pump and supplies or lactation consulting through University medical plans, as well as local and national resources for additional support.

Information on the Lactation Support Program is available on the Human Resources Family Friendly website and the Family Friendly Purdue Facebook page.
