Faculty invited to fall President's Colloquium series starting Wednesday

The President's Colloquium series for faculty members is resuming this fall with three opportunities for visiting and hearing a faculty presentation. The first colloquium is Wednesday (Sept. 28).

Each colloquium, which meets at 4-6 p.m. at Westwood, the Purdue presidential residence, will include a wine and hors d'oeuvre reception after the presentation. Registration is required for each, and links are available for each session here. The website also has the schedule with descriptions of each presentation.

The series, arranged at the invitation of President Mitch Daniels, is meant to provide timely information about Purdue scholars' research as well as networking opportunities for faculty members from across the University.

At the Sept. 28 colloquium, the topic of "Yuck! The Nature and Moral Significance of Disgust" will be presented by Daniel Kelly, associate professor of philosophy. Kelly's work explores how a better understanding of the psychology behind disgust sheds light on a number of different facets of human nature. An examination of disgust also can improve our grasp on the nature of morality and inform our ethical aspirations. In this talk, he will sketch out the core character of disgust and the influence it can have in different aspects of human social life.

The fall's other President's Colloquium gatherings:

* Nov. 7 (M) -- John McConnell, the Burton D. Morgan Distinguished Chair of Private Enterprise (Finance), on "When Is Good News Bad and Vice Versa? The Fortune Rankings of America’s Most Admired Companies."

* Dec. 6 (T) -- Marc Caffee, professor and associate head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Darryl Granger, professor and associate head of the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, on "Bones, Caves, and Cosmic Rays: Accelerator Mass Spectrometry at PRIME Lab Pieces Together an Ancient Story."

Presenters for spring semester will be added soon.
