Suicide prevention QPR Gatekeeper Training available

Purdue's Advocacy and Support Center in the Office of the Dean of Students will be offering opportunities in April for faculty and staff to attend QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training sessions.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer -- three simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help.

QPR can be learned in the Gatekeeper course in as little as two hours. Instructors will present, discuss and role-play scenarios until participants feel comfortable with the material. At the completion of the training, participants will obtain a certificate.

The Advocacy and Support Center will offering trainings on the following dates, all in Schleman Hall, Room B038:

* Tuesday (April 5) -- 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
* Tuesday (April 12) -- 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
* Wednesday (April 13) -- 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
* Tuesday (April 19) -- 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Registration is available here. Sessions are open to faculty, staff and students. For more information, contact Carol Ben-Davies, assistant dean of students, at cbd@purdue.edu or 94-1747.

Thanks to a Purdue Parent & Family Advisory Board "Big Give" Grant, more than 800 Purdue faculty, staff, and students have become certified QPR gatekeepers. Purdue QPR gatekeepers who attended the QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training reported an increased level of understanding about suicide and suicide prevention, warnings signs of suicide, how to ask someone about suicide, persuading someone to get help, and how to get help for someone.

Anyone with a concern for a student who may be experiencing stressful issues such as personal, family or academic concerns can direct them to the Advocacy and Support Center. Students can call to schedule an appointment or can come by the Advocacy and Support Center in Schleman Hall, Room 207, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students of concern can be reported at www.purdue.edu/advocacy/faculty/incident.html.
