Parent, caregiver workshops to be offered

March 31, 2015  


Human Resources will bring in local experts to present a variety of workshops geared toward parents and caregivers. Workshops are open to parents or caregivers with all ages of children, but each topic is geared toward a specific age group, which is listed at the end of the presentation description.

Those attending are encouraged to bring lunch to eat while listening to the presentation. Time for asking questions and networking with other parents and caregivers will be offered.

Block Party
April 14 (T). Noon-1 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 214C
We are having a block party! Children develop a variety of skills through block play -- math, early engineering, social skills, physics, creativity, physical skills and movement. Join other parents as we play with blocks of all types while learning how you can help your child develop these skills through block play! This workshop will be presented by Kathy Murray from Purdue Extension. (Children birth-8 years)

Book of Jenny: Getting in Tune with Baby
April 30 (Th). Noon-1 p.m., Purdue Memorial Union, Room 263AB
Join other parents of young children as we explore the topic of signals or cues that babies use to communicate their wants and needs. Parents will discuss how to identify and understand why it is important to respond to their baby quickly and sensitively. This workshop will be presented by Kathy Murray from Purdue Extension. (Children birth-5 years)

Locating and Evaluating Child Care
May 13 (W). Noon-1 p.m., Stewart Center, Room 204
What should I look for in a child care program? Is where I have my child the best place for them? Find out what you need to look for in quality child care programs. We will share information on how to find quality programs and what different types of programs are available in the community.  Onsite referrals will be available as well. This workshop will be presented by Katherine Toro-Masso from the Childcare Resource Network. (Children all ages)

Keep Talking: Building a Language Rich Environment
May 28 (Th). Noon-1 p.m., Stewart Center, Room 204
A rich language environment includes children hearing many different words and sounds through the day, in conversations, storytelling, singing, book reading and in playing with others and talking with themselves. Explore how you can support your children in building their language skills through a rich language environment. This workshop will be presented by Kathy Murray from Purdue Extension. (Children birth to 5 years)

I am Moving, I am Learning
June 4 (Th). Noon -1 p.m., Stewart Center, Room 311
I Am Moving, I Am Learning is a fun, active program that will help parents encourage children's movement and healthy food choices each day.  Learn about activities you can do with your children indoors or outdoors, nutrition tips and fun ways to support your child's healthy development. This workshop will be presented by Kelsie Muller from Purdue Extension. (Children birth-5 years)

The Parenting Journey
June 23 (T). Noon -1 p.m. Purdue Memorial Union, Room 263AB
Raising a child is an exciting journey that like any journey includes surprises and challenges. Along the way we may become tired or lost and temporarily lose our focus. Join other parents in discussing steps we can take along the parenting journey to ensure that we and our children stay on track. This workshop will be presented by Kathy Murray from Purdue Extension. (Children all ages)
