Purdue Crew donation to assist local residents

February 8, 2012

Purdue Crew on Thursday (Feb. 9) will present $10,417.93 to the Lafayette Urban Ministries' Centralized Emergency Fund as aid for local residents who need assistance with utilities, food or other basic needs.

The presentation will be at 3 p.m. at the Purdue Boathouse.

On Jan. 28, some 137 members of Purdue Crew participated in a row-a-thon, rowing more than 30,000 meters, and sought donations before the event. In previous years, the team had raised $700-$800. But changing its approach this year, the group raised $21,763.39 as of Feb 6, including nearly $1,800 on the day of the event. The net funding received will be split evenly between Lafayette Urban Ministries and Purdue Crew.

Coach Dave Kucik, expecting donations to increase but not nearly to the extent they did, pledged to row a meter for each dollar donated. He ended up rowing 19,000 meters on Jan. 28 with another 2,764 left to do.

Kucik will welcome those on hand for the gathering Thursday. Howard Taylor, director of Purdue's Division of Recreational Sports, along with three Purdue Crew members and Joe Micon, executive director of Lafayette Urban Ministry, will offer brief comments.
