Grounds Department receives award for effectiveness, innovation

August 11, 2011

Purdue's Grounds Department has been honored with an APPA 2011 Effective and Innovative Practices Award for designing an application system for a brine and beet juice deicing solution.

"The system allows us to pretreat roadways with a liquid salt solution, which retards ice and snow during the early stages of a snowstorm and makes snow removal easier during larger snow events," says Gary Evans, director of grounds. "This has resulted in a capital investment cost savings as well as ongoing labor savings for snow removal operations; and it also contributes to the safety of Purdue roads and walkways during and after winter weather events."

APPA is an international organization of educational facilities professionals. The group promotes leadership for professionals seeking to build their careers, transform their institutions, and elevate the value and recognition of facilities in education. APPA presents its Effective and Innovative Practices Award to recognize programs and processes that enhance service delivery, lower costs, increase productivity, improve customer service, generate revenue or otherwise benefit the educational institution.

This is the second year in a row the Purdue Physical Facilities organization has received this award. APPA recognized the Grounds and Building Services departments with an Effective and Innovative Practices Award in 2010 for their partnership in developing a campus-wide recycling program that incorporates desk-side collection of recyclables.
