'Boiler Bytes 21' premiering Wednesday on BTN

June 27, 2011

A new installment of a Purdue's news magazine on the Big Ten Network will premiere Wednesday (June 29).

"Boiler Bytes 21," a 30-minute program produced by Purdue, will debut at noon on BTN. Another look at "Boiler Bytes 16" will follow at 12:30 p.m. These Boiler Bytes installments are scheduled for a repeat showing at 3 and 3:30 a.m. Thursday. A week later in the same time slots, "Boiler Bytes 21" will repeat July 6 and 7 followed by "Boiler Bytes 1."

"Boiler Bytes 21" has as its hosts Chellie and Sara Zou, the Silver Twins from Purdue Bands & Orchestras. The program has five featured segments:

* The inaugural Collegiate evGrandPrix, conducted by Purdue on May 7 during Emerging Tech Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Electric vehicles built by student teams from the United States, Ireland and the United Kingdom competed.

* Purdue's Warehouse & Surplus Store, which has a half-century record of guiding reuse and recycling of campus items no longer needed in the department that owned them. The store offers bargains, and interested persons or departments can explore the inventory online at a new site, https://www.purdue.edu/salvage/.

* Spring Fling, Purdue's employee appreciation celebration with lunch and plenty of things to do and see. Activities range from traditional favorites such as the fitness walk and classic vehicle show to newer events such as a talent show. Community outreach is included with a blood bank and a food collection.

* A record-setting Rube Goldberg Machine Contest entry that turns the simple task of watering a plant into a 244-step trek through time.

* A glimpse of some of the sculptures on campus. Some honor heritage, such as those of Amelia Earhart and Neil Armstrong. Others focus on stimulating imagination, such as the recent "Sidewinder" near Pao Hall made of plant matter.

"Boiler Bytes" installments also provide a chance to check on promotional spots for Purdue, Purdue Research Park and the Purdue Alumni Association. "Boiler Bytes 21" contains a promo for Purdue jewelry.
