'Boiler Bytes 18' premiering today on BTN

March 30, 2011

A new installment of a Purdue television program featuring Purdue people and programs will premiere today (March 30) on the Big Ten Network.

"Boiler Bytes 18," a 30-minute video news magazine produced by Purdue, will debut at noon on BTN. Another look at "Purdue Profiles: Orville Redenbacher" will follow at 12:30 p.m. The Boiler Bytes installment is scheduled for a repeat showing at 3 a.m. Thursday, followed that time by "Purdue Profiles: John Wooden Documentary."

"Boiler Bytes 18" has guest hosts Chellie and Sara Zou, the Silver Twins from Purdue Bands & Orchestras. The program has five featured segments:

* Purdue ice hockey, a club sport that this year won its intercollegiate division and went to the championship game. Most members have played hockey for years and consider it both fun and serious as they prepare for and play a 36-game schedule.

* Research on visual perception and performance, especially in sports, by Jessica Witt, assistant professor of  psychological sciences. Her team is studying why athletes perform better if to them the baseball looks bigger, or the golf hole looks bigger, or the goal post looks wider.

* The Paint Crew, the 2,500-strong student group that loudly supports the men's basketball team in games at Mackey Arena, energizing the crowd and having loads of fun.

* Purdue's honoring of alumnus Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who in January 2009 landed a stricken US Airways airliner in the Hudson River shortly after takeoff, then stayed on board until all 155 passengers and crew were safely off the plane. In November, Purdue bestowed on him the Neil A. Armstrong Medal of Excellence and the College of Liberal Arts presented its Distinguished Alumnus Award.

* Snobot, a robot commanding a snowblower with remote human instruction, which was designed, engineered, built and tested by a team of students in the mechanical engineering senior design course.

"Boiler Bytes" installments also provide a chance to check on promotional spots for Purdue, Purdue Research Park and the Purdue Alumni Association. "Boiler Bytes 18" contains the series' first promo for Purdue jewelry.
