'Boiler Bytes 13' to make debut on BTN

September 29, 2010

A new installment of a Purdue television program featuring Purdue people and programs will premiere today (Sept. 29) on the Big Ten Network.

"Boiler Bytes 13," a 30-minute video news magazine produced by Purdue, will debut at noon on BTN. Another look at "Boiler Bytes 12" will follow at 12:30 p.m. Both programs have student hosts and reporters. The programs are scheduled for repeat showings at 3 and 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

A week later, on Oct. 6 and 7, "Boiler Bytes 13" will be shown again at the same hours, but followed each of those times by "The Boilermakers: World Food Prize Laureates."

"Boiler Bytes 13" has five featured segments on these topics:

* The Purdue Latin and Ballroom Dance Club, which was hosting its first callout since a dance team from the club appeared on ABC-TV's "Dancing with the Stars." Several hundred students, including many novices, came.

* A patent-pending drug injection device developed by three graduate students. The device's two-chamber approach eliminates mixing mix-ups and works without refrigeration, among several advantages. The project was developed through Purdue's Biomedship program, linking entrepreneurship and biomedical technology.

* The basic utility vehicle (BUV) created by a senior design team of 20 students from four disciplines. It can be built in developing countries using mostly local materials and labor, and it is being piloted in Cameroon using wood.

* Technology Experiences Cheerleading (TEC) camp, which allows middle school and high school girls to perceive how technology connects to their interests. One goal is to lessen the gender gap in technology fields. The girls use computer design programs and work with Purdue cheerleaders.

* Purdue Day at the Indiana State Fair. This ninth special Purdue Day at the fair highlights exhibits, booths and demonstrations that run throughout the 17-day fair, as well as celebrating Purdue with some special events. From hands-on tech to animals to master gardeners to President Córdova, it's all about Purdue.

"Boiler Bytes" installments also provide a chance to check on promotional spots for Purdue, Purdue Research Park and the Purdue Alumni Association.
