Since its debut in May, the Purdue iPhone application has attracted more than 8,500 downloads, a number that is expected to grow rapidly with the return to campus of students, an expanded menu of offerings, and the addition of an iPad app.

"As our office seeks to provide useful information about the University in easily usable formats, we look continually at the varied and changing ways our audiences are obtaining information," says Martin Sickafoose, director of online experience and emerging technologies. "Each time we update the app, we are looking for ways to add features that will benefit our audience. This time we focused on what prospective students and returning students might want to see in a usable app."

New features have recently been added to the free app, including three tours that take the viewer step-by-step to campus landmarks and feature details about each. Using GPS through their iPhones and iPads, visitors can find their location on the map and get directions to the next landmark.

Users also will find:

* A link displaying the menus found at the various dining halls across campus.

* A way to mark shortcuts to favorite news topics, whether about students or research. The app will collect all news in that particular category and display it.

* A campus map and list of building locations.

* University news stories and event listings.

* Videos from the Purdue YouTube channel.

* Extras including "Hail Purdue!"

The app's features can be explored at www.purdue.edu/mobile. Viewers will also find a link so they can download the app from the iTunes store.
