'Boiler Bytes 10' and 'Boiler Nation: BCC' showing on BTN

May 24, 2010

New installments of two television programs featuring Purdue people and programs will be shown Wednesday (May 26) on the Big Ten Network.

"Boiler Bytes 10," a 30-minute video news magazine produced by Purdue, will be shown at 10 a.m. on BTN. "Boiler Nation: Black Cultural Center," a 30-minute in-depth look at one subject, will follow at 10:30 a.m. Both programs have student hosts and reporters.

This is the third "Boiler Nation" program, following ones about the Physics on the Road program and student athletic trainers.

"Boiler Bytes 10" has five featured segments on these topics:

* The inaugural Electric Vehicle Grand Prix, conducted April 18. It is related to courses and a $6.1 million federal grant for Purdue to lead the Indiana Advanced Electric Vehicle Training and Education Consortium.

* Elevator pitch. Entrants in undergraduate and open divisions have two minutes to pitch a business idea to a potential investor. It's about innovation, communication and gaining experience -- and maybe $1,000.

* World's Strongest Boilermaker. It's not just brute strength, but also brains, balance, endurance. Contestants in six weight divisions pull the Boilermaker Special, carry a concrete Motion P and perform other tasks to have fun and a competitive experience.

* Egg Launch competition for high school students. This don't-crack-the-shell event at the College of Technology at Anderson gets students on campus and looking at Purdue as well as using math, science and communication.

* Bug Bowl. This springtime favorite, still with cockroach races and cricket spitting, adds fun and excitement to learning about not just insects, but also science and Purdue's education and research.

Both "Boiler Bytes" and "Boiler Nation" provide a chance to check on promotional spots for Purdue, Purdue Research Park and the Purdue Alumni Association.

The programs are scheduled for a repeat showing at 2 and 2:30 a.m. Thursday.
