'Boiler Bytes 8,' new 'Boiler Nation' to debut on BTN

March 26, 2010

New installments of two television programs featuring Purdue people and programs will premiere today (March 26) on the Big Ten Network.

"Boiler Bytes 8," a 30-minute video news magazine produced by Purdue, will be shown on BTN at 2 p.m. "Boiler Nation," a 30-minute in-depth look at one subject, will follow at 2:30 p.m. Both programs have student hosts and reporters.

"Boiler Nation: Student Athletic Trainers" will examine the athletic training undergraduate academic program, whose students advance year by year in both their scientific knowledge and their hands-on skills and experience. By their senior year, they are integral parts of the athletic program, working regularly with the physical and psychological aspects of athletes' situations.

Gaining experience in planning and carrying out rehabilitation programs, they graduate ready to work at various levels or proceed to graduate work. Some have forged careers at the college or pro sports level.

This is the second "Boiler Nation" program, following one about the Physics on the Road program.

"Boiler Bytes 8" has five featured segments on these topics:

* An engineering course on roller coaster design, which teaches engineering principles using an interesting, maybe even thrilling, subject.

* The innovative Learn Lab in the renovated Management and Economics Library, where classes and project work stress teamwork and information literacy.

* Photographer Andy Hancock of Purdue's Office of Marketing and Media, who loves the varied opportunities of a large campus -- and has notched several covers for Sports Illustrated magazine.

* Walk to the Moon, a part of Purdue's Healthy Planet initiative in which everyone on campus is invited to tally their steps with a pedometer and log them toward a total of about 477 million steps it would take to walk to the moon.

* Big Man on Campus, a sorority's philanthropic project staged as a talent competition and raising amazing dollars for the fight against breast cancer.

Both "Boiler Bytes" and "Boiler Nation" provide a chance to check on promotional spots for Purdue, Purdue Research Park and the Purdue Alumni Association.

The programs are scheduled for a repeat showing at 4 and 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Previous "Boiler Bytes" segments are at www.purdue.edu/boilerbytes/ and on Purdue's YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/purdue. "Boiler Nation" is also to be placed on YouTube.
