Changes announced to background check policy

February 20, 2012

The University-wide Background Check Policy, which went into effect May 1, 2011, has expanded its scope to include additional staff groups.

In a message to faculty and staff on Nov. 17, 2011, President France A. Córdova reminded University employees of their obligation to safeguard employees, students and campus visitors, and background checks are an important part of this process.

Effective March 1, all temporary positions will now be subject to background checks, regardless of the duration of the assignment. Currently, the policy requires checks on all temporary positions that last for more than 90 days.

All regular faculty and staff positions are already subject to the policy, which requires criminal history and sexual offender registry checks for all new hires. On the West Lafayette campus, these checks are paid for from a central account managed by the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources. There is no cost to the department for the above background checks.

The revised Background Check Policy (www.purdue.edu/policies/human-resources/vif6.html) and updated process for temporary positions (www.purdue.edu/hr/doc/backgroundCheckProcessTemporary.docx) are available online.
