CIE workshop to show use of sales techniques in teaching

October 13, 2011

Good teachers know how to sell things -- ideas, concepts, philosophies, and attitudes -- and Scott Downey and his father, David, both from the Department of Agricultural Economics, will explain some key techniques Oct. 20 in a Center for Instructional Excellence workshop.

Scott Downey is assistant professor of agricultural economics, and David Downey is professor emeritus. The workshop is titled "What Do Teachers and Salespeople Have in Common?" In the workshop, they will discuss how teachers and salesmen overcome resistance, how to explain things in terms of benefits, how to probe, what the technique of underpromising and overdelivering is, and how to use complaints as an opportunity for growth and improvement.

The event is set for 9-10:30 a.m. in Stewart Center, Room 202. It is part of CIE's College Teaching Workshops Series II: Expanding Your Teaching Toolkit. More about CIE is at www.purdue.edu/cie. To register for this workshop, go to www.itap.purdue.edu/training/registration/?offeringid=5159.
