CIE to offer two-part workshop on Calibrated Peer Review

February 17, 2011

The Center for Instructional Excellence will offer a two-part workshop on Calibrated Peer Review on Feb. 24 and March 3.

"Using Calibrated Peer Review" will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 24 and March 3 in Krannert Building,  Management and Economics Library LearnLab, Room 250. Ellen Gundlach, continuing lecturer in statistics, and Nancy Pelaez, associate professor of biological sciences, will lead the workshop.

Calibrated Peer Review is a Web-based management tool that enables writing with peer review in classes of any size or discipline. Students learn how to evaluate their peers' documents by reviewing sample texts, which include a common student errors and misconceptions. Calibrated Peer Review has been shown to improve content knowledge in the disciplines, improve writing skills (particularly among weaker writers) and develop critical thinking skills.

During the Feb. 24 session, Gundlach and Pelaez will present an overview of the process. On March 3, they will focus on helping instructors write specific assignments for their courses.
