CIE workshop to focus on teaching lecture classes

February 3, 2011

The Center for Instructional Excellence will offer a workshop focused on engaging students in lecture classes on Feb. 10.

"Do We Choose to be Healthy?" will be offered from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in Stewart Center, Room 322.

Gerry Hyner, professor of health and kinesiology, and Vicki Simpson, clinical assistant professor of nursing, will demonstrate a technique they use in their classes -- lecturing for 10 minutes and then stopping to ask their students questions such as "What do you think you know?" and "What more would you like to know?" The title of the workshop refers to the content of the lecture Hyner and Simpson will be referring to in their demonstration.

Although Hyner and Simpson typically use case studies as their primary method of instruction, this technique and variations of it can be used for many different topics and disciplines. Students need to come to class prepared for this technique to be effective, and Hyner and Simpson will explain how they encourage students to prepare.
