Purdue is ranked No. 3 among public universities and No. 7 overall nationally in the 2027 College Free Speech Rankings, a strong rating that affirms the university’s commitment to free and open debate. Purdue trails the Georgia Institute of Technology (No. 3) and Michigan Technological University (No. 4) among U.S. public institutions, according to the survey released by College Pulse and the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, known as FIRE.

Ryan Folk, an emerging leader in plant evolutionary biology, has joined Purdue’s Department of Botany and Plant Pathology as an associate professor. Folk was hired through Purdue’s Moveable Dream Hires program. The program is designed to attract high-performing, top-caliber faculty to the university.
Researchers are preparing an experiment to fly aboard Purdue 1 — the 2027 space mission with an all-Boilermaker crew — to study laser-cooled atoms in microgravity, which is work tied to quantum positioning, navigation and timing, or Q-PNT. The long-term goal is navigation that can work without satellites, making space and potentially systems on Earth more resilient.

Purdue students now have access to the new Pickett-Chaney Pickleball and Tennis Complex, honoring two families with deep Purdue ties. Led by Recreation & Wellness, the outdoor facility features 18 resurfaced pickleball courts — including three championship-sized courts — plus two tennis courts, all individually fenced. A social space rounds out the complex for connecting, watching and studying.
