Bison are one of the most majestic animals in North America. But they suffer every summer under swarms of biting flies. Purdue mechanical engineering students have developed a device that attracts bison to a scratching post and automatically sprays them with insect repellent — with no human intervention required.
Purdue’s College of Agriculture is thrilled to welcome Ozan Ciftci, a renowned food engineering expert, to the Department of Food Science. Ciftci was hired through Purdue’s Moveable Dream Hires program, which is designed to attract high-performing, top-caliber faculty to the university.
Purdue’s collection of bronze sculptures by the French impressionist Edgar Degas will be relocated to buildings and spaces throughout the West Lafayette and Indianapolis campuses during winter recess, creating new opportunities for students, faculty, staff and visitors to encounter original works of art in places where they learn, work and gather every day. The Degas Gallery in the Purdue Memorial Union will close Oct. 9.
Lauren Link, assistant athletics director of sports nutrition and Department of Nutrition Science alumna, started a student-athlete garden located on the east side of the football practice fields. The garden helps athletes learn where their food comes from and offers more ways to boost their vegetable intake. With support from Purdue’s administration, the College of Agriculture and Purdue Grounds, the garden took off and has flourished with anywhere from 20-30 student-athletes regularly participating each semester.
