Four Purdue faculty members have been elected as 2024 fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, one of the highest national distinctions within the scientific community. The select fellowship recognizes distinguished achievement among scientists whose work has advanced science or its applications.
A Purdue University invention that could help reduce time and money spent on the construction and repair of concrete highway pavement and other structures has been recognized as a gold winner of an Edison Award in the Critical Human Infrastructure category. The Edison Awards, considered the “Oscars of innovation,” are given annually to “recognize the persistence and excellence that also characterized Thomas Edison’s work.”
On April 18, ReElement Technologies signed an exclusive license to use patented Purdue technologies to domestically refine and sell minerals critical in manufacturing modern, high-tech products for commercial and industrial use. The license was signed during the Purdue Innovates Startup and Technology Expo 2024 at the Purdue Memorial Union.
Allison Boyd, a first-generation college student in the Polytechnic Institute majoring in aerospace engineering technology, has received the Truman Scholarship. The Truman Scholarship is defined as the premier graduate fellowship program for students pursuing careers in public service leadership. They are chosen based on their demonstration of leadership, academic excellence, and commitment to public service. Boyd plans to use the Truman Scholarship to pursue multiple grad school degrees in computational analysis and public policy.
After a competitive search, Purdue University has announced Xiao Wang, the J.O. Berger and M.E. Bock Professor of Statistics, will take on the role of head of the Department of Statistics, effective immediately. Wang joined Purdue University as an assistant professor in 2009 and has served as interim head since August 2023.
As Boilermakers around the world prepare to rally for Purdue Wednesday (April 24), several celebrations will be taking place throughout the day. President Mung Chiang is inviting the campus and local community to “Run & Rally” with him at 1 p.m. on the steps of Hovde Hall. The route will loop around Mackey Arena and end on the Memorial Mall, which will be transformed into the university’s first-ever selfie museum for this year’s Purdue Day of Giving student experience.
Over the last 10 years, Purdue has seen a steady rise in the number of students with disabilities requiring accommodations, reflecting a national trend. This growth highlights the importance of continuing to adapt our campus' support systems to meet the evolving needs of students. That’s why Leslie Miller was recently hired as a faculty accessibility consultant for the Center for Instructional Excellence. In her new position, Miller will support instructors as they implement accessibility measures and uphold Purdue’s commitment to providing a transformative education.
