Purdue Beef Unit to host showcase and sale

April 6, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Beef producers can learn about some of the latest production tools and methods at Purdue University's Beef Unit Showcase and Production Sale. The second annual event will be April 17 at the Purdue Animal Science Research and Education Center Beef Unit near West Lafayette.

The event begins at 9 a.m. and will feature several programs highlighting recent research and tips for success in beef management.

Allen Bridges, assistant professor of animal sciences, said producers also will be able to learn more about the activities of the Purdue Beef Unit.

"The Extension education event will be an excellent opportunity for producers to see the research that's being done by Purdue scientists and researchers," he said. "It will provide some good information that they can take back to their farms."

Sessions include recent advancements in estrous synchronization and artificial insemination programs and extending the storage of wet distillers' grains. Carcass ultrasonography, increasing carcass weight and muscle mass while improving feed efficiency, and antibiotic residues in cattle also will be discussed.

During the Extension sessions for adults, juniors will have the chance to participate in a cattle judging workshop. The Golden Girl Production Cow-Calf Sale will begin at 2 p.m. The sale includes 50 commercial cow-calf pairs.

Brian DeFreese, Purdue Beef Unit manager, said the calves are out of top club calf bulls such as Monopoly, Unforgiven and Hardline, as well as the Beef Unit's calving ease bull, U-71.

"Some of the calves will be worth as much or more this fall as they have to spend for the pair," DeFreese said. "The cows have stood the test of time. They calve every year on time, and they're sound, functional and productive."

Presenters for the showcase include Bridges and Purdue colleagues Ron Lemenager, Dennis Buckmaster, Matt Claeys, Jon Schoonmaker and Paul Ebner.

The Purdue Block & Bridle Club and the Purdue Beef Team sponsor the showcase and sale.
