Three new installments in the video news series "Boiler Bytes" have been posted on Purdue's YouTube site, furnishing fresh glimpses into the ways Purdue makes a difference in lives and knowledge.
The three segments, each about six to nine minutes in length, are:
* Global Soundscapes -- A Purdue center is pioneering the inclusion of sound in ecological study worldwide. Bryan Pijanowski, professor of forestry and natural resources, says a soundscape is the collection of all sounds that occur at a place -- biological, geophysical or anthropological. Making use of the University's huge cyberinfrastructure, Purdue's Center for Global Soundscapes is gathering "big data," he says, from programmable recording units his team is placing all over the world.
* Purdue University Dance Marathon -- This student-initiated effort has raised more than $1 million for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis each of the past two years. The organization's work is centered on a fall event in which participants, for 18 hours, "stand for those who can't." That night and throughout the year, PUDM provides many fun and touching moments to help achieve the goal of helping children.
* Hops -- As one of beer's four main ingredients, hops has a growing market in microbreweries, and Purdue horticulture researchers are working to restore a century-past Midwest tradition of growing hops. This perennial crop, grown mostly in the Northwest in recent decades, is being adapted for better production in Indiana's climate. Hops requires a trellis system to support the vines, and careful handling is important, so Purdue is also teaching potential growers how to get going.
These installments also will combine as "Boiler Bytes 32" on the Big Ten Network. BTN plans to telecast the program at 8 p.m. April 8 after a Purdue-Indiana softball doubleheader from Bloomington. A repeat telecast within the next week is possible.
