WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Since her time in K-12 education began nearly 37 years ago, Miranda Brand knew that she wanted to serve students, families and teachers by becoming an administrator.
“I started working on my master’s in educational leadership during my third year of public school teaching and moved into my first school administration position at the age of 27, shortly after earning my master’s degree,” Brand said. “That administration role really shaped me as a leader.”
Eight years later, she earned her EdD in educational leadership. Earning her doctorate provided more opportunities to move into higher education a few years later.
“During my 20 years in public education, 13 of those were in school administration,” Brand said. “Many of the leadership lessons I learned all those years ago can still be applied to my work at Purdue Global, even now in my new role.”
Brand, who was appointed dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and School of Aviation in January 2025, said the focus on the majority of their programs align with students’ desire to make an impact on the world around them. Many of Purdue Global’s students are career changers, drawn to fields where they can use their skills to improve the lives of others.
“Student success to me is when our students master the knowledge and skills needed to achieve their career goals,” Brand said. “It’s not just about graduating — it’s about giving them the tools to thrive in their chosen careers and communities.”
Originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina, Brand believes her journey to higher education leadership is not only marked by her own academic achievements, but also by a deep commitment to helping others reach theirs.

“My path to higher education has been shaped by my experiences as a military spouse,” Brand said. “I’ve traveled the world, living in various places, and that mobility has enriched both my personal and professional life.”
After earning her bachelor’s degree in education, her first job teaching was with the Department of Defense schools in Germany, where she met her husband, David, also a Purdue Global faculty member, while he was deployed with the U.S. Army.
“My passion for education and leadership grew over the years,” Brand said. “And while I was enjoying my work in the K-12 system, I wanted to share what I had learned with others looking to pursue careers in education. That’s what drew me to Purdue Global.”
A seamless transition to Purdue Global
Brand joined Purdue Global — Purdue’s online university for working adults — nearly 20 years ago as an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education. Her first role shaped her outlook on education, innovation and helping adult learners advance their careers.
“What brought me to Purdue Global was the chance to work in a truly student-focused environment,” Brand said. “But what keeps me here is the positivity and the focus on collaboration among my colleagues. It’s an environment where everyone is committed to student success.”
That commitment to student success has only deepened in her new role as dean — a promotion that Brand said marks the pinnacle of her career — an achievement she described as both a professional honor and a personal milestone.
“This role is without a doubt the greatest honor of my professional career,” Brand said. “The trust and confidence that Purdue Global leadership has shown in me are humbling, and I look forward to building on the legacy of my predecessors.”
Legacy of leadership
Brand acknowledged the immense influence of former dean, Sara Sander, whose leadership laid the foundation for her success.
“Sara has been a mentor and an inspiration to me throughout my time at Purdue Global,” Brand said. “Her leadership has been a model for me, and I plan to continue her work by maintaining the momentum she’s established. Her vision for the college and our students will always be a guiding force in my role as dean.”
Brand was hired by Sander as academic chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies and Early Childhood departments in 2008.
As dean, Brand oversees more than 700 faculty members across 45 academic programs and five academic departments. Currently, the college maintains more than 1,000 college-industry partnerships. The college serves almost 11,000 students who are pursuing degrees at the doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s and associate levels, as well as certificates.
A continued commitment to student-centered growth
Brand is particularly excited about the evolving role of technology in the classroom. From her first experience teaching online nearly 20 years ago, she has witnessed dramatic changes in how students and professors interact, particularly with the integration of new technologies like AI.
“The future is incredibly promising,” Brand said. “Technology, including AI, has the potential to create more engaging and personalized learning experiences. And that’s where we’re heading — ensuring students have access to the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.”
Brand has been particularly focused on strengthening partnerships between Purdue Global and industry organizations. Through these collaborations, many students secure jobs in their chosen fields immediately after graduation.
“One of our greatest successes has been the partnerships we’ve built with industry leaders, especially in fields like applied behavior analysis,” Brand said. “Almost 30% of our graduates secure employment through these partnerships, which speaks volumes about the power of collaboration.”
One of the college’s new degree programs — a doctor of education in leadership and innovation — has more than 800 students, with its first cohort graduating in May. Brand is excited to see how the students expand opportunities in their workplaces with the degree.
Additionally, Brand sees the importance of interdisciplinary degree programs that can meet the demands of a rapidly changing job market and technologies.
“We’re currently exploring new programs that will keep our students at the forefront of innovation,” Brand said. “As technology advances, so must our programs. We want to ensure that students have access to the latest skills and knowledge that will make them competitive in today’s workforce.”
With a leadership style rooted in collaboration, empathy and a commitment to lifelong learning, she is ready to continue guiding the school into a new era — one where students can continue to truly flourish.
“I’m excited about the opportunities we have to build upon the strong foundation already in place,” Brand said. “We’re always looking for ways to improve and provide our students with the best possible education. The future is bright, and I’m proud to be part of it.”
