WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University’s Board of Trustees on Friday (Dec. 13) approved the metrics on which President Mung Chiang’s performance will be measured for the 2024-25 fiscal year. Continuing the practice that started with President Emeritus Mitch Daniels, a significant portion of the Purdue president’s compensation is at risk and scored in a detailed manner each year.
The goals and metrics, which are annually reviewed and revised by the board, define and measure progress in five priority areas. Metrics will measure progress for 2024-25 in:
- Financial success (16%): Factors include a favorable operating budget, fundraising dollars and number of individuals.
- Student success (37%): Factors include starting salary of graduates, percentage of Pell Grant recipients in undergraduate enrollment, five-year graduation rate, Purdue University in Indianapolis incoming class size, systemwide number of graduates of all degrees, Purdue University Online enrollment, underrepresented minority student applications, graduate student career yield rate improvement and the two-year average of new degrees at Purdue West Lafayette.
- Research (20%): Factors include external research funding amount, number of active industry partners, number of patents filed and faculty scholarship support.
- Reputation (10%): Factors include the composite of three national rankings — U.S. News & World Report undergraduate rankings and the U.S. portion of QS and Times Higher Education rankings — and the number of earned media placements.
- University initiatives (17%): Factors include completion success of capital projects, coordination of Purdue University Online and Purdue Global, and two other significant achievements.
“As President Chiang continues to ensure that Purdue University remains at the top of institutions of higher education to the benefit of our students, our state and our world, we as a board continue to set high goals,” said trustee Malcolm DeKryger, chair of the board’s Compensation Committee, which recommended the metrics for board approval. “In true Boilermaker spirit, we aspire to continue taking giants leaps with Mung and his team, our faculty and staff.”
