A video featuring Farzad Taheripour, a research professor in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University, has been uploaded to the AP Video Hub.

In the video, he explains how the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) has impacted biofuel production in the United States. All videos in the Campus Insights series are free for download and use by all AP members and can be found at apvideohub.ap.org or by doing a general search on the Associated Press site. STORYLINE

As oil prices have risen, interest has increased in biofuels as an alternative. Taheripour says that RFS is a policy that is designed to encourage the production and consumption of biofuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel. He adds that this can reduce dependency on oil, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve income as well as job opportunities in rural areas. Taheripour says that, in the short term, some of his colleagues were concerned that this policy would increase prices and harm the consumer. However, recent papers appear to indicate that while prices did increase initially, over time most of these prices ended up being lower than they were before the implementation of RFS.
