Gaps In LGBTQIA+ Undergraduate Experiences In Higher Education*

Climate
  • 28.4% of queer-spectrum students reported that they had considered dropping out of college compared to 16.5% of heterosexual students.
  • 37.8% of trans-spectrum students reported that they had considered dropping out of college compared to 17.9% of cisgender/non-transgender students.
Peer Interactions
  • 47.6% of queer-spectrum students reported lower quality of interactions with their peers compared to 55.8% of heterosexual students.
  • 43.1% of trans-spectrum students reported lower quality of interactions with their peers compared to 54.9% of cisgender/non-transgender students.
Mental Health
  • When asked to rate their emotional health compared to the average person their age:
    • 42.8% of queer-spectrum students selected “below average/lowest 10%” compared to 13.4% of heterosexual students.
    • 49.6% of trans-spectrum students selected “below average/lowest 10%” compared to 15.8% of cisgender/non-transgender students.

  • 31.8% of queer-spectrum students reported that depression impacted their academics, compared to 14.0% of heterosexual students.1
    33.7% of trans-spectrum students reported that depression impacted their academics, compared to 15.5% of cisgender/non-transgender students.2
STEM Enrollment
  • 40.0% of queer-spectrum students were enrolled in a STEM major, compared to 47.1% of heterosexual students.
  • 39.0% of trans-spectrum students were enrolled in a STEM major, compared to 54.0% of cisgender/non-transgender students.
  • Within STEM, the largest disparity in enrollment occurred in engineering with 8.3% of queer-spectrumstudents enrolled, compared to 13.6% of heterosexual students.
  • Within STEM, the second largest disparity in enrollment occurred in engineering with 9.7% of trans-spectrum students enrolled, compared to 13.0% of cisgender/non-transgender students.
Classroom Preparedness and Attendance
  • 8.0% of queer-spectrum students reported going to class unprepared, compared to 4.9% of heterosexual students.
  • 11.3% of trans-spectrum students reported going to class unprepared, compared to 5.1% of cisgender/non-transgender students.

  • 9.0% of queer-spectrum students reported skipping class, compared to 5.8% of heterosexual students.
  • 11.2% of trans-spectrum students reported skipping class, compared to 6.1% of cisgender/non-transgender students.

  • 49.5% of queer-spectrum students reported turning in assignments late, compared to 36.6% of heterosexual students.3
  • 62.6% of trans-spectrum students reported turning in assignments late, compared to 38.0% of cisgender/non-transgender students.4

  • 20.5% of queer-spectrum students reported failing one more college courses, compared to 16.4% of heterosexual students.5
  • 21.2% of trans-spectrum students reported failing one more college courses, compared to 16.8% of cisgender/non-transgender students.6
