In addition to addressing science and religion in general, the course will focus on the religions of the Latin West, exploring whether a divine creator can be reconciled with Lemaître’s Big Bang or Darwin’s natural selection and whether immortal souls still make sense in light of recent developments in neuroscience and other sciences of the mind. Claims that the God hypothesis is supported by science, whether because of the surprising “effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences” (Wigner) or because of the intricate order in nature, will also be discussed.

In the Fall, students will explore fundamental philosophical issues in a dedicated section of PHIL 11000, The Big Questions: Introduction to Philosophy – which satisfies the UCC Humanities requirement. In the Spring, students will take PHIL 22700, Science and Religion. The aim of the spring will be to use the fundamental philosophical tools learned in PHIL 11000 to address the issues explored in 22700.
