Why are we moving to D2L Brightspace?

Starting in the summer of 2018, Purdue began exploring possible replacements to Blackboard Learn, the learning management system in use at the West Lafayette, Fort Wayne, and Northwest campuses, as the system was approaching the end of its life cycle.

D2L Brightspace was selected after a year-long review process that incorporated feedback from faculty, staff and students. More information about the review, including the reasons for selecting Brightspace, can be found at www.purdue.edu/lms-review.

Who is involved in the implementation process?

The implementation of D2L Brightspace is overseen by the Office of the Provost, with support from the Office of Instructional Technology.  The governance page gives a breakdown of the team members involved.

When do I have to be out of Blackboard Learn?

The last opportunity to use Blackboard Learn is during Summer 2021.  Beginning Fall 2021, Blackboard Learn will enter archival mode and no longer be accessible to faculty, staff, and students. 

When can I start teaching using Brightspace?

Any faculty may begin using the system during the Summer 2020 semester.  

Is there an easy way to move my content from Blackboard Learn to Brightspace?

Yes!  There is a tool in Blackboard that will help make content migration easier.  More details to come soon.  Due to the amount of data that could be moved, the process will likely have to take place during Blackboard Learn’s off-peak hours to ensure the stability of the system. More information will be made available when the process has been finalized.

Is training available for faculty and instructors to learn about Brightspace?

Starting in January 2020, a series of live workshops and open labs will be available for faculty and staff. Purdue Northwest campus units, departments or colleges interested in hosting a training event for their team members can request training by sending an email to oit@pnw.edu.

Can I have access to Brightspace even if I am not ready to teach in it yet?

YES!  All PNW faculty will have access to Brightspace during the first week of February 2020.  Any staff member who is interested may contact the oit@pnw.edu to request a sandbox or inquire about training.

What will happen to my current Blackboard Learn course?

Blackboard Learn will not be available after the start of the Fall 2021 academic semester for the West Lafayette campus, but there will be a process available to move content from Blackboard Learn to Brightspace.  More information about content migration will be available in the spring.  

What learning tool integrations (LTIs) are available in Brightspace?
