This series of blog articles addresses topics that we find interesting and provides potentially useful information to anyone trying to enhance their business skills.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/leansixsigmaonline\/blog\/the-six-sigma-way-the-six-sigma-line\/\">first entry<\/a> was an introductory piece, so now you can start to play ball, maybe even talk about starting up a <a href=\"\/leansixsigmaonline\/\">Six Sigma program<\/a>. But first, let\u2019s discuss what to do before you even get up to bat. To start, build a supporting infrastructure, which includes getting support from management.<\/p>\n<p>Top management support extends beyond lip service to actual, day-to-day leadership. You need top management to believe that continuous improvement should be a routine way of doing things and that everyone\u2019s job includes looking for ways to optimize their work. Top management needs to hold middle management accountable for improvement results and be involved in project reviews and program progress.<\/p>\n<p>After you\u2019re assured that top management is on the team bus, you\u2019ll build the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/learning\/library\/steering-committees-four-research-questions-5601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steering Team<\/a>.\u00a0 This team will determine the structure and pace of the program and provide guidance during implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Team members will address questions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What areas of our business will we focus on?<\/li>\n<li>What will we measure and how will we measure it?<\/li>\n<li>What are our goals for the program?<\/li>\n<li>Who will champion our efforts?<\/li>\n<li>Who will train our group?<\/li>\n<li>How many projects, how soon?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The team should be diverse, comprise four to six people, and include all levels of the organization. The team reports directly to the top manager in the organization.<\/p>\n<p>The team is charged with the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Guiding and steering improvement with a strategy that aligns with the organization\u2019s goals and objectives.<\/li>\n<li>Conducting a baseline assessment to determine starting points and readiness.<\/li>\n<li>Setting priorities and plans.<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring the improvement projects and continually assessing the program.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Knowing where you\u2019re starting from is also essential.<\/strong> Here are some productive questions to ask when conducting your baseline assessment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do we have a vision, business strategy, or mission statement?<\/li>\n<li>Do we work well together in teams?<\/li>\n<li>How do we handle communication?<\/li>\n<li>Do we have a quality management system in place? How effective is it?
