Hostname Standard

Purpose

This standard defines the process for requesting new or changed hostnames for Purdue-IT-hosted web sites.

Brief Description

Web Services is responsible for coordinating all hostname requests with the Purdue Hostmaster. Customers must contact Web Services for any such requests.

Details

All requests for new or changed hostnames for Purdue-IT-hosted web sites must be coordinated by Web Services. Some requests may require an email be sent from a dean, department head, or person of similar standing for approval. Web Services will advise if this is necessary. Note that hostname changes may invalidate existing SSL certificates.

In order to reliably maintain and renew SSL certificates all domain names must be hosted by Purdue’s DNS. Please contact Web Services before purchasing any non-Purdue domain name (for example something.org or something.com). If you already own a non-Purdue domain name, please contact us for assistance in transferring this name to Purdue. Please note that all Purdue domains require approval by the Domain Oversight Committee. Please allow extra time for the approval process when making a request.

When contacting Web Services about a new or changed hostname, please include

  • the exact name desired
  • a technical contact
  • any other details or explanation needed to clarify the request

Please note that external (non-Purdue) DNS names will incur an annual cost-recovery charge from the Purdue Hostmaster.
