Study Abroad / Study Away Intercultural Learning (SAIL) Grant Applications

Application Overview

The SAIL Subsidy Grant application for 2023-24 Academic Year will be open starting August 7 with a deadline of September 8, 2023. SAIL grants vary in amount and will require matching amount at a 3:1 ratio from the applicant’s department or college/school. Contact the Office of Study Abroad for more information about approval of departmental study abroad programs and the SAIL Grant.

If a proposed study abroad program will be administered by multiple colleges/schools, please submit only one application per program.  Please select the college/school that will be fiscally responsible for the program and submit the application accordingly. If there is a shared responsibility, then please select one International Program Officer (IPO) to approve the application. For a complete list of IPOs go here.

Preference for Study Abroad in Intercultural Learning (SAIL) grants will be given to faculty/staff who meet one or more of the following criteria:

a) plan to lead a study abroad program that is 14 days or longer in length.
b) has successfully completed the Intercultural Pedagogy Grant (IPG) program.
c) has a proven track record of successfully selecting, assessing and reporting on intercultural learning outcomes from a previous study abroad program.

Please note that SAIL grants are competitive and limited in number. Meeting criteria does not guarantee that a grant will be awarded. Announcement of SAIL grant decisions has yet to be scheduled.

Under-enrollment Protocols:

Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer programs that have been awarded a SAIL grant subsidy that do not enroll 10 or more students (by November 1st for Winter Break programs, February 1st for Spring Break programs, April 1st for Summer programs) may be subject to a special review supervised by the Vice President of Global Partnerships and Programs. If pursued, this review will determine if the SAIL grant subsidy will remain as originally awarded or be pro-rated at the 3:1 ratio. In this context the term "enroll" means a student has applied for a program and has also paid a deposit.

(Please note that SAIL grant applicants who have not successfully completed the IPG program must apply to participate in this year's cohort on or before Friday, September 8th by following these directions. IPG provides intercultural training, curriculum design, and virtual instructional support for faculty and staff embedding intercultural competence in international and/or intercultural programs.
