TLCoP March 1: Student Belonging in Our Teaching

All Purdue West Lafayette instructors, teaching assistants, staff, and students are invited to join the Teaching and Learning Community of Practice (TLCoP) online for its second session on Tuesday, March 1, noon-1 p.m. ET, to discuss the concept of belonging, and its connections to learning and teaching.

Purdue defines a sense of belonging as “the extent to which students agree that they are a member/part of and are valued/supported by the campus community, and that they are respected and can be themselves at Purdue University.” Belonging is a construct that has been a focus for many units on Purdue’s campus, including the recent renaming of the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging.

Heather Servaty-Seib, associate vice provost for teaching & learning, and professor of counseling psychology, will discuss ongoing efforts toward supporting student belonging and how it is measured at PWL. There will be time to explore this data and how belonging can inform our instruction, our classrooms, and the messages we send to our students.

All TLCoP sessions during the spring 2022 semester will be held online via Zoom, so please register for each. Further details on the community of practice and other TLCoP sessions this semester are available on the TLCoP website.

TLCoP is part of the Innovative Learning hub approach to connect PWL instructors to the resources they need to engage students, develop courses in any instructional modality, and enhance learning across the University. Members include the Center for Instructional Excellence, Libraries and the School of Information Studies, Purdue Online and Teaching and Learning Technologies.
