TLCoP fall 2022 focuses on teaching writing across disciplines, begins Sept. 12

Purdue West Lafayette instructors, teaching assistants, staff, and students are invited to join the Teaching and Learning Community of Practice (TLCoP) for its online fall sessions exploring the unique affordances of teaching writing across a wide range of disciplines at Purdue.

The first session Monday, Sept. 12, 3-4 p.m., will focus on Writing for student engagement. It will feature several instructors who purposefully integrate writing to deepen learning—rather than only as a tool for assessment. This session provides a space for participants to engage in open discussion about practices with other instructors across a range of disciplines on campus.

Professors David Atkinson (History), Jennifer Foray (History), and Charlie Catalano (Communication), will share their perspectives, insights, and practical examples about why and how they strategically use writing to support student engagement and learning in their courses. Participants will share their intentions for teaching writing in their contexts, how our students experience writing in their courses and future professional endeavors, and practical assessment and activity ideas to help our students achieve course learning goals.

Session 2, Monday, Oct. 24, 3-4 p.m., addresses Writing feedback & assessment and the practical ways that instructors can assess writing assignments and activities. Professors Lindsay Hamm (Sociology) and Amy Sheehan (Pharmacy) will share their practices and the technologies they leverage for assessing writing assignments. In this session, participants will have opportunities to examine some of the challenges associated with assessing writing, explore new approaches based on the insights and practices of other participants, and brainstorm efficient and effective strategies for assessing writing for their contexts.

Further details on a November session will be available soon.

All TLCoP sessions during the fall 2022 semester will be held online via Zoom, so please register for each. Further details on the community of practice and other TLCoP sessions this semester are available on the TLCoP website.
