Instructors can learn more about the new plagiarism checker tool, Turnitin, in upcoming workshops at all campuses

Turnitin Originality has replaced SafeAssign as the supported plagiarism checker integrated into Purdue’s Learning Management System, Brightspace. Turnitin can assist Purdue West Lafayette, Northwest, and Fort Wayne instructors by comparing text in submitted assignments to a database of both student-submitted and published research papers, then producing a “similarity report” that highlights possible instances of plagiarism. Turnitin can also be used as a teaching tool, allowing students to submit rough drafts of assignments for automated feedback on grammar, spelling, and citation practices that they can use to improve their work before grading.

To support the use of Turnitin, Purdue is offering a pair of workshops.

  • On Monday, Nov. 9, 11-12 a.m. ET join the Office of Instructional Technology at Purdue Northwest and Innovative Learning from Purdue West Lafayette for Improved Citation and Integrity Practices with Turnitin.
Workshop facilitators from Northwest and West Lafayette will demonstrate how to set up either a draft or graded assignment in Turnitin, walk through the options available to instructors for automated checking, and review best practices. Attendees will also get to see how students view Turnitin, both as a submission tool and a feedback report. This workshop is open to faculty, staff and graduate students at Northwest, West Lafayette, and Global.
  • For faculty and staff at Purdue Fort Wayne, there will be a workshop offered on Nov. 11, 1:30- 2:30 p.m. ET. The session, which will be hosted by the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT), is titled Turnitin to Enhance Academic Integrity. This workshop is available to faculty, staff and graduate students at Fort Wayne.
Join facilitators from CELT as they address how Turnitin can help combat academic dishonesty, a growing issue in the educational system. In this workshop, instructors will learn about how to link Turnitin with assignments and how to interpret the results to maintain academic integrity.
