March instructional workshops highlight: Brightspace, video, rubrics, portfolios

The Innovative Learning Team at West Lafayette, the Office of Instructional Technology and Center for Faculty Excellence at Purdue Northwest, and the Purdue Fort Wayne Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) offer several workshops and sessions in February to help instructors.

Brightspace Exams
Mar. 4, 1-1:50 p.m.
Prepare for midterms by attending this online https://www.training.purdue.edu/ITAP.aspx. Topics covered for this session are setting up exams, creating or important questions, including a review of available question types, and how to post grades and other submission views. There will be time at the end of the session for questions.

Video Best Practices
Mar. 8, 11-11:50 a.m.
This workshop provides attendees with an overview of the university supported tools and resources available for creating, editing, and sharing video content. Other topics will include tips for engaging your viewers, an overview of different hardware for creating videos, and how to make your videos accessible to all viewers.

Brightspace Gradebook
Mar. 9, 11-11:50 a.m.
This online workshop will cover setting up and maintaining your grade book in Brightspace. Topics covered for this session include creating categories, creating a grade item, associating a grade item with a quiz and assignment, and creating a weighted grade scheme. There will be time at the end of the session for questions.

Gradescope For Exams
Mar. 18, 1-1:50 p.m.
This online workshop will explore the use of Gradescope to help with the delivery of online or face to face exams. Topics covered will include creating a standard or online assignment, meeting DRC accommodations, and linking an assignment with Brightspace. We will also review setting up and using rubrics in Gradescope to speed up grading. There will be time at the end of the session for questions.

Brightspace Basics
Mar. 22, 3-3:50 p.m.
This flipped workshop will provide a brief overview of the Brightspace interface for new users. The remainder of the session will be designated for Q&A and requested demonstrations.

Innovative Learning and Teaching and Learning Technologies also offer custom workshops on supported tools and systems on request. These sessions can be tailored to a specific topic or audience. Instructional Video Creation
Mar. 3, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.
During this session, we will introduce the different university-supported educational technologies that can be used to create instructional videos, including Kaltura Capture, Kaltura Classroom, Camtasia, and Video Express Room. The similarities and differences will be covered. The session includes a 50 minutes introduction and 10 minutes Q&A.

Open Lab Brightspace Quiz Tool

Mid-Term Evaluation Data Interpretation and Action Plans
Mar. 10, 1-2 p.m.
Join this session for guidance on interpreting your mid-term evaluation data. If you have not conducted a mid-term evaluation, your course learning analytics offer another source of data to evaluate and adjust your course in the middle of the semester. What if you combine both your midterm evaluation and course analytics? Join this session for guidance on interpreting your mid-term evaluation data and using learning analytics to make informed decisions about your course and student learning.

Brightspace Rubrics Basics
Mar. 17, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
During this one-hour session, you will learn the basics of the Brightspace rubrics tool and how you can use it to support student learning.

Using Turnitin to Enhance Academic Integrity
Mar. 24, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Academic dishonesty is a growing issue in our educational system. In this workshop we will talk about how to link Turnitin with your assignments and how to interpret the results.

Pedagogy Circle Meeting – Towards Inclusive Curricula
Mar. 11, 3;30-5 p.m. (Central)
At this meeting we will discuss how to create more inclusive curricula for PNW – a project that raises at least three questions: (1) In what ways do we currently exclude diversity and how does this harm students? (2) Which disciplines lend themselves better to more inclusive curricula? (3) How do we move towards more inclusive curricula?
