The team has run 28 IMPACT Semester cohorts since 2011 and 6 IMPACT Week cohorts, a condensed, remote IMPACT experience launched in 2022.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>IMPACT was awarded a First in the World grant from the United States Department of Education entitled Success through Transformative Education and Active Mentoring (STEAM).\u00a0 Through the use of experimental and control sections, this project aimed to empirically demonstrate that a more student-centered learning environment leads to benefits such as greater learning, higher grades, and higher rates of student retention in the major and the university.<\/p>\n<p>IMPACT was a large influence on the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/activelearning\/\">Wimeth Active Learning Center<\/a> (WALC) in 2017, providing faculty and students with 27 active learning classrooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTheoretical Framework\n\t\t\t\t<p>The IMPACT program is guided by a strong theoretical framework, which has been validated and used in several research projects for the past 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>Self-Determination Theory (Deci &amp; Ryan, 1985; Ryan &amp; Deci, 2017) is a motivational theory that posits the existence of three basic psychological needs, which when fulfilled, contribute to the creation of a student-centered, autonomy-supportive learning environment.<\/p>\n<p>The creation of a student-centered, autonomy-supportive learning environment fosters student engagement and student competence, and an increased attainment of course-specific learning outcomes, degree completion, retention, and graduation rates.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/impact\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/JAU6726-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"_JAU6726\" height=\"1707\" width=\"2560\" title=\"_JAU6726\" \/>\n\t\t<h3>Autonomy<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<p>The feelings of volition and choice; endorsement of behavior, ownership of the learning process.<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t<h3>Competence<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<p>The extent to which students believe they have mastered content material or are able to perform academically.<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t<h3>Relatedness<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<p>The need to feel belongingness and connectedness with others and the material presented in class, also termed relevance.<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/impact\/program-overview\/\" target=\"_self\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEngage with IMPACT\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/purdue.ca1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_1RKEC6Q5Pwid4uW\" target=\"_self\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tApply Now\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n<h2>\n\t\tOutcomes, Recognition, and Scholarship \n\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/tableau.it.purdue.edu\/#\/site\/public\/views\/IMPACTDataSummary\/DataSummary?:iid=1\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\tOver\n\t\t<h3>700<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<p>instructor participants<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/tableau.it.purdue.edu\/#\/site\/public\/views\/IMPACTDataSummary\/DataSummary?:iid=1\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\tOver\n\t\t<h3>665<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<p>courses transformed<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/impact\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/outcomes1.jpg\" alt=\"Impact participants engaged in the program\" height=\"928\" width=\"1233\" title=\"outcomes1\" \/>\n\t\t<h3>100%<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<p>of colleges at Purdue have participated in IMPACT<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t\tOver\n\t\t<h3>90%<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<p>of undergraduates take an IMPACT course during their time at Purdue<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t\tOver\n\t\t<h3>80%<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<p>of students rate their IMPACT course as highly student-centered<\/p>\t\t\n\t<p>IMPACT has gained national notoriety through recent publications and has received interest near and far from instructors and universities wanting to participate, collaborate, and mimic the effectiveness of the program model.<\/p>\n<p>The IMPACT program was chosen as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/how-purdue-professors-are-building-more-active-and-engaged-classrooms\/\">2018 Innovator<\/a> in the Chronicle of Higher Education and has been featured by the <a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/ED594392.pdf\">National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00091383.2019.1547077\">Change Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Years of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) publications have come out of IMPACT, from the faculty, staff, and researchers involved.
