Dysphagia is difficulties with any aspect of swallowing.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tWhat are some symptoms of dysphagia?<br>\n\t<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choking, coughing, or gagging when swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Sensation of food getting stuck in throat<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained weight loss<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty controlling food in mouth<\/li>\n<li>Drooling<\/li>\n<li>Regurgitation of food into mouth or noise<\/li>\n<li>Food or stomach acid backing up in throat<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty starting a swallow<\/li>\n<li>Painful swallow (odynophagia)<\/li>\n<li>Having to alter your food or drink preparation in order to successfully swallow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tWhat are some consequences of dysphagia?<br>\n\t<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recurrent pneumonia<\/li>\n<li>Malnutrition<\/li>\n<li>Dehydration<\/li>\n<li>Failure to thrive<\/li>\n<li>Reduced quality of life<\/li>\n<li>Chronic lung disease<\/li>\n<li>Decreased social connection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tIf I think I have dysphagia, what should I do?<br>\n\t<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>If you are experiencing symptoms of dysphagia, ask your physician for a referral to a local Speech-Language Pathologist who specializes in swallowing disorders.
