Malandraki<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>The faculty and staff of our lab are dedicated to high-level basic and clinical research and to improving the health and quality of life of children and adults with swallowing disorders (also known as dysphagia)<\/strong>. Our research has been supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NIH, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders<\/a> (NIDCD), the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nibib.nih.gov\/\">\u00a0National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/\">National Institute on Aging<\/a> (NIA), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/\">National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke<\/a> (NINDS), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacpdm.org\/awards\/grants\">American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine<\/a>\u00a0and the Pedal-with-Pete Foundation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/research\/funding-and-grant-writing\/funding\/showalter.php\">Ralph W. and Grace M. Showalter Research Trust<\/a>, the Purdue Research Foundation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/discoverypark\/birck\/research\/smart-films.php\">SMART consortium<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianactsi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/discoverypark\/WGHI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women&#8217;s Global Health Institute,<\/a> and by private donors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/i-eatlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Image-1-300x200.png\" alt=\"Brain Activity during swallowing\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The research conducted in our lab focuses on: a) the use of advanced imaging to understand the neural underpinnings of swallowing in the normal population and following neurological trauma or intervention, b) developing and evaluating new neurorehabilitation interventions for neurogenic dysphagia, and c) the development and validation of telehealth\u00a0systems to test the effectiveness of providing\u00a0swallowing rehabilitation from a distance.<\/p>\n<p>Our laboratory (housed in two dedicated and one shared spaces within Lyles-Porter Hall) includes four fully-equipped MRI\/fMRI analysis workstations, high quality electromyographic and respiratory physiology recording and analysis equipment, and multiple swallowing diagnostic and intervention tools, including a high quality FEES station (KayPentax Swallowing Workstation) and two flexible endoscopes. Our lab also houses a videofluoroscopic c-arm (OEC 9800 Plus Digital Mobile 12&#8243; GE) that allows real-time high quality videofluoroscopic data acquisition,<strong> making us one of the fi<\/strong><strong>rst research laboratories (outside a medical setting) in the US that has the capability to conduct videofluoroscopic swallowing studies.\u00a0<\/strong>The Purdue I-EaT Swallowing Research Laboratory operates in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/i-eatlab\/i-eat-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Purdue I-EaT Swallowing Research Clinic<\/a> of the M.D. Steer Speech and Language Clinic, one of the first dedicated University-based dysphagia clinics in the country.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/i-eatlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_0449-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Purdue I-EaT Laboratory\u2019s main research affiliations include: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tc.columbia.edu\/cit\/\">Center for Cerebral Palsy Research at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Mi-Bio\/\">Mi-Bio Purdue<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/discoverypark\/pillars\/integrative-neuroscience-center\/\">Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/hhs\/mri\/\">Purdue Life Science MRI Facility<\/a>,\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/hhs\/cerebbral\/index.html\">Purdue Center for Research on Brain, Behavior and NeuroRehabilitation (CEREBBRAL)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/hhs\/spitlab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Purdue\u00a0Saliva, Perception, Ingestion, and Tongues (SPIT) Laboratory<\/a>,\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationwidechildrens.org\/interdisciplinary-feeding-clinic\">Nationwide Children\u2019s Hospital (Interdisciplinary Feeding Clinic), in Columbus, Ohio<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evaggelismos-hosp.gr\/0000000000\/index.html\">University Hospital Evangelismos in Athens, Greece<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click to see our 2024 Newsletter!
