Skill Development

Behind every successful goal achievement is proper skills development. The realization of any goal comes as a result of developing the right skills to succeed in it. Skill development is crucial and can’t be stressed enough. If you skip the stage of skill acquisition,  you risk not fully accomplishing your goal.  No matter how accomplished you are now, you’ll always be able to achieve greater results by enlarging and enriching your skills. The parameters of what you can achieve at Purdue are defined by the skills you have. By mastering and expanding your skills, you will increase the results you can achieve.

The process of skills development can be a daunting task. Here are a few quick tips:

Ensure you have the right focus.
Work with your supervisor to develop a personalized development plan.  View a sample development plan.

Learn from the best.
It’s easiest to learn from the people who have been there before. Identify the people who are already experts in the skills you want to develop and ask them for assistance. Look for a coach or a mentor who is an expert in the field.

Research – Read up.
The Internet is an excellent place to find skill development resources. Be sure to access Purdue’s site and our online book summaries for leading edge video tutorials and publications covering diverse topics.

Attend trainings.
Trainings, seminars and workshops are great sources to quickly develop skills. Training serves as a concentrated source of information that is already organized and structured into a series of programs. Be sure to access Purdue’s site and our online book summaries for leading edge video tutorials and publications covering diverse topics. Get into action – Do it.
There is no better way to learn than to get right into the thick of things and do it. When you start doing, you get immediate feedback on your progress and whether it fits with your expectations. Until you try implementing the new skill, it will always remain in your mind as a thought.  Applying a skill closes all the ‘what ifs’ and creates momentum to move forward.
