Faculty-related Hiring (including Grads and Post-docs)

Guiding Principles
  • The priority is to preserve the jobs of our current employees whenever possible and appropriate. Prior to hiring new staff, consider the job responsibilities, and the current and future workload of current staff – could someone be reassigned to handle the duties of the proposed new employee?
  • Regarding instruction, consider current lecturers and grad student capacity prior to hiring new limited term lecturers, lecturers, visiting faculty, or other temporary employees. We fully recognize that our enrollment for fall is highly uncertain now, so flexibility is very important during this crisis.
  • Prior to hiring new post docs, consider current graduate student appointments and responsibilities, as well as confidence in funding source.
  • For all hiring decisions consider the funding source and the stability of the funding source
  • There may be hiring delays for those that require sponsorship
  • Current faculty searches will be reviewed by each Dean in consultation with the Provost. In many cases ongoing faculty searches will continue, however, there will be situations where a pause is appropriate.  Please consult with your Dean.
  • All Graduate Student offers will be reviewed by the Dean or designee (designee can include Associate Deans or Department Heads)
  • New commitments for summer support for AY graduate students will also be reviewed by the Dean or designee
  • Guiding principles should be considered, and funding of current graduate students should be considered prior to adding new graduate students.
  • All post doc hires and extensions will be reviewed by the Dean or designee and Director of Financial Affairs within each college (designee can include Associate Deans or Department Heads). The following criteria must be considered:
  • Funding source – What is the funding source? If the funding source is grant funding, is there a risk that Purdue won’t receive the funding?
  • Duration of the appointment – is the funding guaranteed for a year or more?
  • All lecturer or limited term lecturer positions will be reviewed by the Dean and the Director of Financial Affairs within each college. The following criteria must be considered:
  • Has the workload of current lecturers been considered?
  • Are there graduate students that can teach the course?
  • Can limited term lecturers meet the instructional needs?
  • Note per Purdue policy Terms and Conditions of Employment of Lecturers VI.F.4 https://www.purdue.edu/policies/human-resources/vif4.html The employment of a Limited-term Lecturer may be terminated prior to the expiration of the contract when the University elects to cancel the course due to not meeting the minimum enrollment requirements for the course.
  • All visiting faculty positions will be reviewed by the Dean and the Director of Financial Affairs within each college. The following criteria must be considered:
  • Has the workload of current staff been considered?
  • Visiting faculty appointments greater than two years require Provost approval, and under the current circumstances it may make sense to approve these instead of hiring new visiting faculty
  • New hires should be reviewed by Dean or designee (designee can include Associate Deans or Department Heads)
  • The following criteria must be considered:
  • Has the workload of current staff been considered?
