West Lafayette open enrollment for 2020-2021 health insurance

West Lafayette open enrollment for 2020-2021 health insurance

Students and graduate staff may enroll in benefits for the 2020–2021 plan year from now until 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. Open enrollment is your annual opportunity to review benefit offerings and make choices for the upcoming year. It is important to complete the steps below by the above deadline, as you may miss out on the opportunity to enroll and may face additional penalties based on your citizenship status if you do not.

In order to be covered by a Purdue medical plan for the 2020-2021 plan year, enrollment must be completed within the Academic HealthPlans (AHP) portal. If you are a domestic student or graduate staff that does not need coverage, you do not need to opt out of coverage.

Elections made during the annual open enrollment period for the 2020-2021 academic year will be in effect from August 1, 2020, through July 31, 2021.* Students who choose to pay by the semester should note that fall semester coverage ends December 31, 2020, and spring semester coverage ends July 31, 2021. For newly eligible students and graduate staff, medical elections will be in effect from the first of the month in which you are eligible/hired and graduate staff dental and voluntary benefit elections will be in effect beginning with your hire date.

* Benefits are only in effect while you are eligible; therefore, if you lose that eligibility (e.g., loss of graduate staff assignment funding or full-time student status), your medical/prescription benefits will end on the last day of the month in which you were eligible. Graduate staff voluntary benefits will end on the last date you were eligible.

Enrollment Steps:

  • Click here to go to the Academic HealthPlans (AHP) Portal and select “Students” or “Graduate Staff” based on the medical insurance in which you intend to enroll. There, you may review more information on the benefits available to you before enrolling.
  • The Quick Links box contains an Enrollment Guide link with step-by-step instructions. First-time users will need to register with AHP with your Purdue student ID (PUID) prior to enrolling.
  • Graduate Staff planning to cover a dependent should review the Graduate Staff and Student Benefits Comparison document to determine the best medical plan for their situation.

Note: Enrollment for graduate staff is a two-step process.

Graduate Staff Dental and other Voluntary Benefits

  • Benefitfocus – a separate portal – is used to enroll for dental and voluntary benefits. For enrollment instructions and information on the benefits available to you as a graduate staff member, please visit the Human Resources Graduate Staff Benefits web page. A valid Social Security Number is required to be on file in your employment record before you can gain access to Benefitfocus.
  • If you are already enrolled in voluntary graduate staff benefits, your elections will remain the same as the previous plan year unless you make changes or opt out of them.
  • Graduate staff who have elected a student plan (such as those covering dependents) will have dental coverage through their Anthem medical plan and should not enroll in the Delta Dental plan through Benefitfocus.

If you do not enroll:

Domestic Students

You will not be able to enroll in the domestic student health insurance plan until the next enrollment period in December 2020 without a qualifying life event (i.e., involuntary loss of coverage on another plan).

International Students

Purdue University requires all international students to participate in a University-sponsored medical insurance plan or to obtain an approved waiver of coverage. Failure to enroll or obtain an approved waiver may negatively impact your legal status per federal immigration regulations.

Click here to review the criteria for eligibility for your campus and to apply for a waiver.

If you do not enroll or receive an approved waiver by the enrollment deadline, a hold will be placed on your academic record, which affects your ability to register for classes, obtain transcripts or graduate. You will also be assessed a $200 late-enrollment fee. If you have missed the enrollment deadline, you must contact the Student Insurance Office in PUSH via email at student-insurance@purdue.edu or call (765) 496-3998 in order to remove the hold, pay the $200 late fee and enroll.

Graduate Staff

Graduate students employed in a graduate staff position(s) or a graduate student with a fellowship administered as an assistantship that carries a minimum of 0.50 FTE/half time/20 hours per week or more on the West Lafayette campus are eligible for graduate staff benefits.

Without a qualifying life event (i.e., involuntary loss of coverage), you will not be able to enroll in graduate staff benefits (e.g., medical/prescription, dental insurance) again until the next academic year’s annual open enrollment. Domestic graduate staff will have the option to enroll in the student insurance plan in December for spring semester coverage.

If you are an international graduate student, please see the International Students section above for additional requirements.
